PHILADELPHIA - Field hockey will be looking to rebound from an opening weekend defeat at the hands of American as it has a pair of road games this Friday and Sunday. This weekend, Penn (0-1) will be on the road again as the Quakers travel to Towson (1-3) on Friday at 6 p.m. and return to Philadelphia on Sunday and make the short trip over to Drexel's field to take on Saint Joseph's (0-4) at 1 p.m. The game against Saint Joseph's will be played on Drexel's Buckley Field.

Youth mixing youth with experience...

*Five freshmen - Alex Iqbal, MaryRose Croddick, Emily Corcoran, Helene Caniglia, and Carly Sokach - started in the first collegiate game of their career.

*Freshman Camille Parry also saw playing time during her first collegiate game.

*Two players from each of the other three classes rounded out the Quakers' starting lineup.

*Five of the six returning players that started in the game against American, started at least 15 games in 2010.

The Penn attack...

*Junior Julie Tahan took the only shot of the game for the Quakers in the first half versus American.

*The Quakers had just one penalty corner opportunity versus American.

*In 2010, Penn averaged just under five penalty corners per game.

*The Quakers' offense also averaged just under five shots on goal per game and seven and a half shots total in 2010.

The Penn defense...

*Freshman Carly Sokach made her collegiate debut as the starting goalkeeper and made four saves.

*Senior Kieran Sweeney took over in goal midway through the second half and allowed just one goal the remainder of the game.

*American got off 18 shots against Penn, 12 that were on goal.

*Penn allowed seven penalty corners in the first game.

New Beginnings, week II: Penn started off the 2011 campaign with its first ever field hockey game versus American. This Friday, Penn will take on Towson for the first time in the program's history.

Scouting Townson...

*The Tigers are 1-3 this season and coming off a 4-3 win against Saint Joseph's.

*Towson also played No. 3 Maryland tough, losing 4-2 last weekend.

*Friday will be the first home game for the Tigers this season.

*Kate Nolan, Katie DeFilippo, and Kim Schnell each have two goals this season.

*Nolan also has two assists on the year, while four other players have one.

*Christine Siwiec has played every minute in goal for Towson. She is allowing three goals per game and has a save percentage of .636.

Coaching homecoming...

*Head coach Colleen Fink and her assistant Katelyn O'Brien both played collegiately at Saint Joseph's.

*Fink was a former captain at Saint Joseph's and also spent two years as an assistant under current Saint Joseph's head coach Michelle Finegan.

*O'Brien currently ranks sixth all-time in goals and points in Hawks' history.

Home away from home: In preparation for games played on AstroTurf this season, Penn has been practicing at Drexel's facilities prior to the game on Sunday.

The Series vs. Saint Joseph's ...

*Penn has played Saint Joseph's every year since 1999 and 15 times in the past 16 years (1995-2010).

*The first meeting between the squads came in 1976 and they did not play again until 1995.

*Penn is 10-6 all-time vs. Saint Joseph's.

Scouting Saint Joseph's...

*The Hawks are coming off a 4-3 loss to Towson.

*Ellen Rowe leads the team with three goals, while Therese Doyle, two goals, and Jordan Martin, one goal, have each scored during the young season.

*Theresa Testa has a team-high three assists. Rachel Walsh has two assists and Rowe has one helper.

*Rowe was named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week after all seven of her points this season came in the team's last two games.

*Liz Messaros has seen the majority of action in goal, starting three games and has a goals against average of 4.22.

*Kate Mitchell played two games in goal, starting one and has allowed 4.31 goals per game.

Looking ahead: After playing Saint Joseph's on Sunday, the Quakers will have their first home game of the season against Lafayette on Wednesday, September 14 at Franklin Field. On Saturday, September 17, Ivy League play opens up as Cornell comes to Franklin Field.
