CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. The University of Pennsylvania field hockey team fell to ACC powerhouse Virginia, 2-1, Saturday afternoon. Senior co-captain Kristen Gray scored Penn's only goal, on a penalty corner from sophomore Meghan Rose and junior Tracy Statter.
Virginia (8-5) got on the board with goals from Allison Flynn and Mia Link to take a 2-0 lead heading into the locker room. Penn (5-6) came out strong in the second half and controlled the tempo of the game, holding the Cavaliers in their own territory for much of the second stanza. The Quakers finally struck when Gray banged a shot into the back of the goal from Rose and Statter with 13 minutes left to play. However, Virginia’s defense stepped up and did not allow another Quaker shot.
Junior netminder Elizabeth Schlossberg made six saves in the game, while Katherine Blair made one stop for UVA. The Cavaliers outshot the Quakers, 9-3, while both teams were awarded six penalty corners.
Penn returns to action Wednesday with a 7:15 p.m. game against Monmouth at Franklin Field.
