Field Hockey Loses to Dartmouth 2-1 in Double-Overtime Battle

PHILADELPHIA - With the scored tied 1-1 since the first half, Dartmouth's Liz Blanken knocked in the winning goal 10:50 into the second overtime period to give the Big Green the win. Laurel McGarvie scored the Quakers' lone goal with help from Kelsey Tahan. Penn is now 3-7 overall and 1-2 in Ivy play.

Dartmouth struck first in the 11th minute of play when junior Kelly McHenry knocked in a deflection off the stick of Rebecca Sobel for the 1-0 lead.

Five minutes later, Penn answered back in the very evenly played game. Kelsey Tahan lofted the ball from just inside the circle and Laurel McGarvie punched it down past keeper Meghan Vakiener to the left corner of the cage.

Tied 1-1, the ball did not find the net for either team for another 78:63 minutes of play. After a scoreless second half and first overtime period, Dartmouth finally connected on a penalty corner -- Blanken inputted the ball then deflected it in past Sweeney.

Sweeney had a career game, recording nine saves in 95:20 minutes of play, including a fantastic stop of a hard shot by Dartmouth's Kelly Hood in the second half. The Big Green's Vakiener had eight saves on the afternoon.

Katie Burke and Katie Moran had great games in the backfield, halting Dartmouth's attacks, while McGarvie acted as a playmaker on the offensive end for Penn.

The Quakers play again tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Temple in a non-conference contest.
