PHILADELPHIA - The Penn field hockey team took to the field for the first time this season Saturday, as they faced off against Syracuse in the Blue Hen Classic at the University of Delaware. Despite inclement weather, the Quakers entered the match-up hoping to get their first W’ of the season.
It was not to be, as Syracuse got the 1-0 win. The game was tied until the last 10 minutes, when Syracuse took advantage of an unlucky bounce of the ball. The lone goal was scored by senior forward Megan Stuart, off a deflection in front of the cage. Senior Michelle Sola got the assist. With the win, Syracuse improves to 1-1 this season.
While the Quakers fall to 0-1 to start the season, it was not without effort on their part. Six Penn players got shots off throughout the game, including senior midfielder Nyssa Liebermann, senior forward Tracy Statter, junior forward Nicole Black, sophomore forward Rachel Eng, sophomore midfielder Meredith Moran, and junior back Melissa Black who led the Quakers with three shots.
Senior goalkeeper Elizabeth Schlossberg stopped three shots in her 70 minutes of action.
The Red and Blue continue play at the Blue Hen Classic tomorrow, as they take on #15 Ohio State at 11:30 am. The Buckeyes defeated host Delaware, 2-1 in the first game today.
