PHILADELPHIA – After an opening win against Lehigh on Friday, the University of Pennsylvania field hockey team fell, 1-0, to Bucknell on Sunday morning at Ellen Vagelos Field.
Applying pressure on the offensive side all game, Bucknell (2-1) pushed the pace, keeping fresh legs on the field with 42 substitutions during the contest.
After a first half that saw Penn (1-1) not record a shot on offense, the Quakers had two opportunities in the second half to equalize the game, but were thwarted by Bucknell goalkeeper junior Shannon Keen. In both chances Keen charged away from goal to deny the Penn attack.
The Quakers tallied four shots on the day, only one on goal, by freshman Alexa Hoover. Junior Elizabeth Hitti recorded two shots.
After allowing the goal to Bucknell’s Liz Wills just over nine minutes in, the Penn defense and senior goalkeeper Allison Weisenfels were able to keep the Bison in check the remainder of the game despite the pressure, but the Quakers were unable to translate from the defensive to offensive end.
Penn will return to action next weekend taking on Fairfield on Friday, Sept. 12, at 4 p.m. before hosting Liberty next Sunday, Sept. 14 at 11 a.m.
