Field Hockey Rights Itself in Win Over Longwood

PHILADELPHIA – After coming into the game having lost its last four contests, including an overtime defeat to Columbia on Saturday, the University of Pennsylvania field hockey team righted itself by pitching its first shutout of the 2014 season, defeating Longwood 5-0 Sunday afternoon at Ellen Vagelos Field.

The five goals are the second highest total thus far this season for Penn. The Quakers opened the season with a nine goal effort in a win over Lehigh.

Four individuals scored against Longwood (6-10) on Sunday, freshman Gina Guccione recorded her first collegiate goal, followed by goals from senior Alex Iqbal and freshman Rachel Huang, while freshman Alexa Hoover scored twice.

Seniors MaryRose Croddick and Emily Corcoran recorded assists, along with junior Elizabeth Hitti.

The Quakers offensive pressure was consistent all afternoon as the Red and Blue totaled 18 shots – nine each half – to the Lancers three total shots. Longwood did not record a shot until the second half.

Penn (5-7, 1-3 Ivy) travels to New Haven, Conn. to face Yale next Saturday in Ivy League play. That game is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. and will show on the Ivy League Digital Network.
