Newark, Del. - Junior Lea Salese and senior co-captain Sara Shelley scored to lift the University of Pennsylvania field hockey team to a 2-1 upset victory over No. 14 Delaware on Sunday afternoon at Rullo Stadium.
The Quakers (5-3) scored in the first half when senior Liz Lorelli and junior Cara Calahan dribbled the ball into Blue Hens (5-4) territory, Lorelli passed the ball to Shelley who snuck the ball past Hens' goalie Meghan Allen for her third goal of the season. Amanda Warrington tied the game on a penalty corner shot late in the first half. The Quakers who controlled the tempo of the game, broke open the stalemate at 36:49 mark on a penalty corner. Salese drilled a shot past Allen on feeds from Shelley and Calahan. The Quaker defense led by junior Kelly McFadden, senior Kate Murphy and freshman Melissa Black played exceptionally well, holding the Fighting Blue Hens to four first half shots.
Sophomore goalie Elizabeth Schlossberg made four saves in the cage, while Allen stopped six Quaker shots. The Red and Blue have won the last four games and have allowed only two goals in the last four games.
