PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania field hockey team had three members selected to play in the USA Field Hockey Young Women’s National Championships taking place this June 22-26 in Lancaster, Pa.
Rising sophomores Alexa Hoover, Jasmine Li, and Liz Mata will represent the Quakers at the Championships, which serve as a high level, international structured competition, and the selection venue for the 2015-16 U.S. Women's Under 21 National Team.
“These young women having the opportunity to showcase the caliber of ability and skill here at Penn, at such a high level tournament is an honor,” said Quaker Head Coach Colleen Fink.
In her freshman season at Penn, Hoover was named Ivy League Rookie of the Year and First-team All-Ivy after leading the league in goals scored, with 14. Hoover was named NFHCA Second-team All-Region for the Mid-Atlantic, and finished tied for 13th in the country averaging just under a goal per game.
Li, bolstered a Penn defense in her first season playing in 14 games, while making one start in the season finale against Ivy rival Princeton. She was also named to the NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad.
In goal, Mata made one start for Penn in her freshman season, compiling three saves against Monmouth. This past December, Hoover and Mata played for the U.S. Women’s National Indoor team.
Heading into the Championships later this month Fink is hopeful for the trio of Quakers.
“It is my sincere hope that Alexa, Jasmine, and Elizabeth are evaluated and seriously considered for the next level of play with the U-21 team, and well beyond. They each display wonderful athleticism and work ethic. I am very proud of their passion and commitment to improve and play at the highest level.”
