Field Hockey Tops Saint Joseph's in Overtime, 2-1

PHILADELPHIA– The University of Pennsylvania battled back from an early 1-0 deficit to defeat Philadelphia City Six rival Saint Joseph’s, 2-1, Wednesday afternoon. Senior co-captain Lea Salese scored the game-winning goal for the Red and Blue three minutes into overtime.

Lauren Luft scored midway through the second half to give Saint Joseph's (2-1) a 1-0 lead, but the Quakers (2-1) scored the equalizer six minutes later to send the game into overtime assenior Cara Calahan scored her first goal of the season on a pass from Salese with 9:30 remaining on the clock.


Salese’s game-winning tally came just 3:14 into the extra session. Salese took the push off of a corner, settled the ball and eluded a defender, then banged the ball into the cage.

Junior Elizabeth Schlossberg made six saves in the Penn goal, while Rebecca Cunfer had four saves for the Hawks.

Penn opens Ivy League play on Sept. 10 when they travel to Harvard to meet the team the Quakers tied for last year's championship. Faceoff is slated for noon.
