First Ivy Road Trip for Softball, Brown/Yale

PHILADELPHIA – It’s the first Ivy road trip of the season and up next for the University of Pennsylvania softball team is Brown and Yale. The Quakers head north to play the Bears on Friday at 2 p.m. and the Bulldogs on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. Due to unplayable field conditions, the doubleheader with Brown will be held at Bryant University’s field. Last Time Out
After giving up the lead in the first game, Penn bounced back and won game two of the Wednesday night doubleheader with Lafayette. The Quakers fell to the Leopards (2-20, 0-3 Patriot) by a score of 9-5 but followed it up with a 10-4 victory. On the day, freshman Jurie Joyner, this week’s Ivy co-Rookie of the Week, was 5-for-7 at the plate, hitting and slugging .714. Sophomore Leah Allen belted her third home run of the season and totaled 5 RBI and 8 total bases, hitting .667 and slugging 1.333.

Scouting Brown (6-10 overall, 1-3 Ivy)
The Bears opened Ivy League play last weekend with Cornell and Princeton, splitting with the Big Red and dropping a pair of 1-0 losses to the Tigers. Against Cornell, Brown fell in game one 4-3 but took game two in five innings, 10-2.

Bears to Watch:
Junior infielder Janet Leung – Second in the Ivy League with a .456 batting average … Leads the team with 26 hits … Also leads the team with a .596 slugging percentage.

Senior pitcher Jessica Cherness – Third in the Ivy League with a 2.53 ERA … Second on the team with 36 innings pitched …Has pitched four complete games in five starts.

Freshman pitcher Katie Orona – Second in the League with a 1.97 ERA … Third in the League with 53 strikeouts and fifth with 4 wins … Has pitched seven complete games across 49.2 innings.

Scouting Yale (4-9 overall, 1-1 Ivy)
Yale remains one of the only Ivy League opponents to only have played two games. Last week the Bulldogs split a doubleheader with Cornell, winning game one 11-4 but falling in six innings in game two, 11-3.

Sophomore third baseman Camille Weisenbach – Tied for fourth in the Ivy League with a .444 batting average … Leads the team with 16 hits and 12 RBI … Also leads the team with a .528 slugging percentage.

Rookie of the Week
For her exceptional performance over the weekend, freshman Jurie Joyner was named this week’s Ivy Rookie of the Week. Announced on Tuesday by the League, Joyner shares this week’s award with Brown’s freshman pitcher Katie Orona.

Currently, Joyner is fourth in the League with a .422 batting average and is tied for sixth with 11 RBI. Hitting .643 in the last five games, the McDonough, Ga. native hit six doubles, four of which were against Harvard. Joyner cleared her first collegiate home run on the first pitch during her first at bat in game two against Harvard, helping the team to a 15-14 victory over the Crimson and a three-game winning streak.

So far against Ivy opponents, Joyner is hitting .727 and slugging 1.455.
