PHILADELPHIA At the 2008 ECAC Championships held last week in Williamsburg, Va., Penn had five gymnasts honored as Academic All-ECAC, including one who was named as one of the ECAC Scholar-Athletes of the Year.
Sophomore Lizzie Lowe was chosen as both Scholar-Athlete of the Year and as Academic All-ECAC. The voting for ECAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year is done by the head coaches of the nine schools that comprise the ECAC. In order to be eligible, a gymnast must maintain a 3.25 GPA and be a member of the school’s gymnastics squad.
Lowe is Penn’s first ECAC Scholar-Athlete of the year since 2006 when Emily Petkun was honored.
Lowe, who has missed all but two meets this season due to an ACL injury, qualified for the 2007 NCAA Regionals in bars and won the Ivy Classic championship in the same event as a freshman. Her best scores this season were a pair of 9.650s on bars against Rutgers and Towson.
Lowe was also honored as a member of the Academic All-ECAC team along with four of her teammates. Joining her are Lucy la Cour, Kerri Lutfey, Briana Pressey and Marissa Rosen. This is the first selection for all five Quakers, who have at least a 3.25 GPA.
