STATE COLLEGE, Pa./ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Three members of the University of Pennsylvania men's indoor track and field team reached the IC4A's at the Penn State National Invitational on Friday, while two more reached the postseason meet with their efforts at the Wesley Brown Invitational on Saturday.
At Penn State, seniors Philip Cawkwell, Luke Grau and James Foreman each reached the IC4A marks with top-five finishes. Sophomore Matt Chylak and freshman Conner Paez qualified for the IC4A's with top-ten performances at Navy.
Cawkwell and Grau finished in second and third, respectively, in the 5,000 meters. Cawkwell was just 10 seconds behind the leader with a career-best effort of 14:33.62. Grau was not far behind in the 16-man field. He was the next to cross the finish line at 14:46.78.
Foreman had a season-best effort in the pole vault. He passed the bar at 4.95 meters (16 feet, 2 3/4 inches) to finish in fifth-place among the 17 competitors.
Chylak was sixth with his IC4A time in the mile. Three Navy runners finished in the top five on their home track as Chylak finished with a career-best time of 4:13.40 in a field of 21.
Paez reached the IC4A qualifying standard in the 3,000 meters. He passed the finish line with two other runners as the small pack finished 6-7-8. With a time of 8:22.94, Paez was the eighth-place finisher, just six-tenths of a second from sixth place.
Other notable finishers for the Quakers at Navy on Saturday. Efayomi Carr was third in the long jump, Brian Lynch was second in the triple jump, Tim Carey was fourth in the 60-meter hurdles, Colin Donnelly was fourth in the 200 meters and Alan Hill was fourth in the 60 meters. Both the 4x400 and distance medley relay teams recorded third-place finishes.
Next weekend, the Quakers head to Yale for the Geigengack Invitational in New Haven, Conn.
