PHILADELPHIA - A trio of Quakers will join four-year-old Vhito DeCapria as captains of the 2015 University of Pennsylvania football team. Seniors Ryan O'Malley, Dan Connaughton and Tyler Drake were selected by their teammates and the football staff to lead the Red and Blue in head coach Ray Priore's first season at the helm.
"All three of these guys have paid the price and will do a great job leading," Priore said in his announcement to the team after practice on Monday (watch here). "But I will tell you right now. Three guys don't lead a team. We all lead each other."
The trio joins DeCapria, who was named captain in April during his bout with cancer (watch here), and was recently announced cancer free by his doctors.
O'Malley is a fifth-year senior and was named second-team All-Ivy last year. The tight end has played in every game over the last three seasons and hauled in six touchdowns in that time.
Drake is also a returning All-Ivy recipient. An honorable mention honoree, the defensive lineman/linebacker hybrid led the team and finished second in the Ivy League with six sacks last season. He was also second on the team with 58 tackles and 8.5 tackles for loss.
Connaughton has played in all 10 games in each of the last two seasons on Penn's defensive line. He finished with 17 tackles in 2014 and has 28 for his career. He has had a tackle in 12 straight games dating back to 2013.
The Quakers continue preseason practice for the next few weeks. The season opener is set for Sept. 19 at Lehigh, and then the Quakers play again five days later at Villanova in a game that was moved to Thursday due to the Papal visit.
