Football Announces Class of 2012

PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania has announced its 26-member football recruiting class. The Class of 2012 will join Head Coach Al Bagnoli’s program this fall for the 2008 season.

“Overall, we feel it is a very solid class,” said Bagnoli, who enters his 17th season at Penn looking for his seventh Ivy League title. “With some luck and hard work, we feel these young men can be a positive addition to our squad.”

Bagnoli -- who is looking for his 200th win as a college coach this season -- acknowledged that, while there is always the goal of having a well-rounded class, there are always certain areas that the coaching staff tries to isolate.

“We try to do both,” he said. “You always want to have a well-rounded class, but we also try and isolate certain positions that we feel need to be addressed. In this class, we tried to isolate the quarterback position on offense and our secondary on defense.”

Breaking down the Class of 2012...

• 26 members from 13 different states, including four apiece from Pennsylvania, New York, Florida and California.

• Three are from the Philadelphia area: Colin Donnelly (Chalfont, Pa.), Edwin Kispert (Erial, N.J.) and Jim McGoldrick (Havertown, Pa.)

• There are 14 offensive and 12 defensive players in the class, with two of the offensive players also viewed as long-snapping candidates.

• On offense there are four linemen, three quarterbacks, three wide receivers, two running backs, and two tight ends (both of whom will also be candidates for the long snapper position)

• On defense there are three linebackers, three linemen, two defensive backs, two safeties, and two ends.

• One of the incoming quarterback candidates, Kyle Olson, comes to Penn after playing at Fullerton (Calif.) Junior College. He played his high school ball at Kennedy.

• Brian Gieske, Luke Nawrocki and Gregory Van Roten were teammates at Chaminade High School on Long Island.
