PHILADELPHIA – Tyrone Quarterman made some history for the University of Pennsylvania football team during its 10th Annual Iron Quaker competition as he became the first Quaker to earn a second overall championship in the annual weightlifting competition.

Quarterman, a junior defensive lineman who also was the overall champion in 2014, had a combined total of 1,335 pounds this year. The Pound-for-Pound champion was freshman wide receiver Trevor Cefalu with an average of 5.95.

Quarterman won one individual event, cleaning 365 pounds. Junior defensive lineman Solo Ceesay won a pair of individual titles, benching 435 and posting a deadlift of 655. Sophomore linebacker claimed the squat with a lift of 560 pounds.

The Iron Quaker is awarded to the player with the highest index score. This score is the cumulative tally of several lifts, namely the clean, squat and bench press, andmultiplied by a constant assigned depending on the player's weight, in order to compensate for size differences.

In 2007, the Penn Football coaching staff created the Iron Quaker competition as a finale to the team's off-season conditioning.Under the direction of Strength and Conditioning CoachSteven Brindleand his staff, the team competes in various lifts-clean, squat and bench press.Awards are given to those who lift the most weight in each category as well as the Iron Quaker award.

This year, the football team added a partnership with Uplifting Athletes to its Iron Quaker competition. The “Lift For Life” program had the Quakers raising money for rare disease awareness with each lift. At the end of the Iron Quaker, Penn had raised $5,919.16 for Uplifting Athletes – a program near to the team’s hearts through junior Kaleb Germinaro’s battle with MS. This school year, Penn Football has helped raise $15,000 for Uplifting Athletes through its various charitable efforts.
