PHILADELPHIA - Following a second straight undefeated Ivy League title, the nation's FCS coaches voted the University of Pennsylvania football team into the 2011 national preseason Top 25. Penn is tied for No. 24 in the FCS Coaches poll released Monday afternoon.
Penn owns the longest active conference win streak in the FCS (15 games) and is the only Ivy League team represented in the Top 25 with 84 points. Defending national champion Eastern Washington is the preseason favorite to repeat as FCS champions with 23 of the 28 first-place votes and 687 points. Penn's second opponent of the season, cross-city rival Villanova, is ranked No. 13 in the season's inaugural poll.
The Red and Blue finished the 2010 season ranked No. 16 in the FCS Coaches poll. The Quakers were not in the coaches' preseason top 25 last season, but were ranked as the 2010 preseason No. 23 among the media - who ranked Penn No. 26 to begin the upcoming 2011 campaign.
Earlier this month, the Quakers were picked to finish No. 1 in the Ivy League media poll for the first time since 2005. Penn returns 32 letterwinners for 2011, including nine starters and eight All-Ivy honorees.
Monday was also Report Day for the Quakers. All 100-plus members of the 2011 edition of the Red and Blue reported for the first day of preseason camp. The team will hold its first practice of the Tuesday night.
The FCS Coaches Poll is based exclusively on a voting panel of head coaches in the FCS under the cooperation of the Collegiate Commissioners Association (CCA) and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and is administered by the Southern Conference.
