Football Returns to Campus; Holds First Practice

PHILADELPHIA - The third week of August means the return of the University of Pennsylvania's football team as the Quakers arrived back in University City on Monday for the first official day of camp.

After checking in at the football offices early in the morning, the squad met with the many members of the support staff which helps prepare the Red and Blue for game day. Included in the presentation were members of the Sports Performance (athletic training and strength & conditioning), compliance, academics and equipment staffs.

In addition to the support staff meetings, the first official team meeting of the year began with a visit from first-year Director of Recreation and Intercollegiate Athletics, Grace Calhoun.

Following physicals and the first official team lift of the season for the upperclassmen, a second team meeting was held to prepare the squad for its first practice on Tuesday.

Tuesday's first practice was a whirlwind of activity as the squad utilized both fields at Penn Park in the shadows of Philadelphi'a skyline. The practice was the first of 28 scheduled practices for the team before its season opener September 20 at Jacksonville. The first full-pad practice is scheduled for August 23.

The Red and Blue were predicted to finish fourth in the Ivy League Preseason Media Poll, marking the 22nd consecutive year that the Quakers were slotted inside the top four in the preseason prognostications.

After the season opener at Jacksonville on Sep. 20, the Quakers will open the 120th season of the nation's oldest collegiate football stadium with a matchup against Villanova at Franklin Field on Sept. 27.Harvard serves as the opponent in Coach Al Bagnoli's final game at Franklin Field on Nov. 15, while the final game of the Bagnoli era is set for Nov. 22 at Cornell.

Tickets are also available at the ticket office located at Weightman Hall on 235 South 33rd Street. The ticket office is open today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. during August, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. starting Monday, August 18.
