MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – In her third event at the 2014 NCAA Division I Women's Swimming and Diving Championships in Minnesota on Saturday, University of Pennsylvania women’s swimming senior Shelby Fortintook 55 in the 100 free with a time of 50.01. She qualified for the event with a time of 49.37. This was her first time swimming the 100 free at NCAAs.
In her second event at NCAAs on Friday, Fortin captured a 43 place finish in the 200 free with a time of 1:47.94. Fortin qualified for the event after setting a new Ivy League Championships meet record with a time of 1:45.69 and winning her third title in the event. Her title in the 200 free was her seventh individual career title, which is the most in any woman in program history.
Last year, Fortin also competed in the 200 free at NCAAs and placed 49 in the nation with her time of 1:48.58.On Thursday, Fortin completed the 500 freestyle in 4:46.91, which placed her 49 in the country.
A three-time Ivy League champion in the 500 free, Fortin set the Penn school record in the event last year at the Ivy League Championships with a time of 4:41.34, which qualified her to compete at NCAA’s last year.
Her time and place this year was an improvement over her results last year, when she placed 58th with a time of 4:52.98.
