CHESTER, Pa. – The University of Pennsylvania men’s track and field team claimed gold in four events and added six-second place finishes to cap a terrific day at the Chester Quarry Classic hosted by Widener University on Saturday. Near perfect conditions provided the setting for great performances as the Quakers displayed a total team effort on the afternoon.

The Red and Blue nabbed gold in four events: the 100 meter hurdles, 800 meters, 1,500 meters and the shot put while second place finishes in the 100, 200, discus, hammer, javelin and pole vault displayed the range of the team across disciplines.

The middle distance specialists teamed up for great performances in the 800 and 1,500. Jeff Wiseman nabbed gold in the 800 in a time of 1:51.79 and Joe Novak notched third place just three tenths of a second after Wiseman for bronze as he crossed the line in 1:52.10.

In a stacked 1,500 race, the Quakers recorded eight of the top-10 spots and placed 13 individuals in the top-16 to dominate the field. Chris Hatler (3:43.64) finished first and nabbed a career-best time with the winning effort while teammate Nick Tuck (3:46.55) came across the line in third place.

Ben Bowers was also a winner in the 110 meter hurdles where he beat the field in 14.60 seconds.

Finalizing the Quaker winners for the day was William Bishop in the shot put. His toss of 16.25m bested the field by .86 meters and the Red and Blue put three in the top-six with efforts from Sam Kaplan and Ellery Lassiter.

Penn’s second place honorees included Peter Whiteneck (100m, 200m), Will Cioffi (discus), Sean Ryan (hammer), Sam Kaplan (javelin) and Mike Benz (pole vault), while bronze performances by Kory Fitzgerald (200m), Cioffi (hammer) and the 4x400 meter relay team capped the day.

Elsewhere in California, Noah Kennedy-White competed in the discus at the Beach Invitational hosted by Long Beach State. His throw of 51.34 meters was good for 11th place in his flight.

The Quakers return to action next weekend at the Larry Ellis Invitational in Princeton, N.J.
