NEW ORLEANS – On Friday afternoon, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced the All-Region honorees for NCAA Division I cross country following the completion of the regional championships meets. Earning the distinction were four runners from the University of Pennsylvania: junior captain Thomas Awad, senior Conner Paez, and sophomore twin sisters Cleo Whiting and Clarissa Whiting.
Awad and Paez led the men to sixth place, with 151 points, out of 23 teams in the Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships on Friday at Penn State. Awad placed third overall with his time of 30:21 and will compete at the NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Ind. for the second year in a row. Paez finished 23 in the region with a time of 30:47.
On the women’s side, the sisters led the way for the Red and Blue with back-to-back finishes. Cleo (21:10) finished 19th while Clarissa (21:12) finished 20th, helping the team place sixth out of 29 teams with a total of 183 points.
A total of 450 student-athletes -- 225 men and 225 women -- earned All-Region by finishing among the top 25 individual finishers at one of the nine regional sites across the country.
