Four Men Earn Trip To NCAA Fencing Championships

PHILADELPHIA - Penn will send a quartet of fencers to the NCAA Championships, taking place this Thursday through Sunday, March 25-28 at Harvard.

Junior Jacob Wischnia, Sophomores Vidur Kapur and Alex Simmons, and freshman Evan Prochniak are all traveling to Cambridge this weekend. The women fence on Thursday and Friday, while the men take to the strips on Saturday and Sunday with National Champions crowned at the end of the weekend.

Kapur is the lone Quaker making a return trip to the NCAA Championships, as the other three will all be fencing in the NCAA Fencing Championships for the first time. Kapur finished with nine wins and took 15th at the 2009 Championships. To qualify for Harvard, the sophomore took eighth at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals in foil.

Wischnia is making his first trip to the NCAA Championships following his best season as a Quaker. The junior went 26-19 this year in dual matches and took 12th at Regionals in epee to earn his trip to Harvard.

Simmons finished third at this year's Mid-Atlantic Regionals to earn an automatic spot in the NCAA Championships. Simmons was a first-team All-Ivy selection in foil this year, with the best record of any foil fencer in the Ivy Championships. He also finished with a 30-8 dual match record.

Prochniak is only a freshman but has led the Quakers in sabre this season with an impressive 31-5 mark in dual matches. He took third in sabre at the Regionals and also was a first-team All-Ivy selection this year.

As a team, men's and women's combined, Penn has finished in seventh place at the NCAA Championships each of the past two years. In 2009 they won 103 bouts, an 11 bout improvement from 2008 as five men and four women took part in the event. Both the men and the women each had two fencers earn All-America honors.
