Four More Quakers Earn Preseason All-America Honors

Season Tickets

PHILADELPHIA - Seniors Matt Schaefer, Chris Wynn and Joe Goniprow, and junior Andrew Samson were all named to the College Sporting News All-America teams on Monday. Samson was the only Ivy player to earn first-team recognition, while Chris Wynn was a third-team representative, and Schaefer and Goniprow claimed honorable mention status.

Samson and Wynn have each received several preseason accolades this summer. Samson was a third-team All-American as Penn’s kicker in 2008 and Wynn returns after earning first-team All-Ivy honors as a defensive back. Last season, Samson set the school record for field goals in a season (16) and Wynn became the first Quaker since the start of Ivy League play in 1956 to record back-to-back seasons with five or more interceptions.

Schaefer will help anchor Penn’s offensive line in 2009. He started all 10 games for the Red and Blue last season and has appeared in 19 of the last 20. Protecting the right side of the line, Schaefer led the way for three different 100-yard rushers in 2008 as the Quakers averaged nearly 140 rushing yards per game. The Naperville, Ill., native was also a part of a unit that led the Ivy League and finished seventh nationally in sacks allowed in 2007.

Goniprow returns after finishing fourth in the Ivy League with 10 tackles for loss in 2008, which includes two sacks. The Barrington, R.I., native started all 10 games and received second-team All-Ivy recognition as a junior defensive lineman for the Quakers. Goniprow was also given an All-America nod in May from Consensus Draft Services as a first-team honoree.

No other school in the Ivy League had more than the four players represented by the Quakers. Appalachian State and Villanova led all schools with eight selections each. Reigning national champion Richmond and Appalachian State placed the most players on the first team with three each. The honors were chosen by the 10 member staff of the College Sporting News (CSN). Since 2000, CSN remains the largest news organization exclusively covering the FCS at www.CollegeSportingNews.com and www.ChampionshipSubdivisionNews.com.
