Philadelphia Four University of Pennsylvania grapplers earned Top-20 rankings in a preseason poll by The Wrestling Mall. The Quakers were picked to finish 14th overall as a team. Senior co-captain Matt Feast received the highest individual ranking, standing in third in his respective weight class.
Feast, a two-time defending EIWA champion at 285 lbs., placed fifth at the 2004 NCAA Championships to earn All-America accolades for the second-consecutive year.
Senior Doug McGraw also garnered Top-10 honors, as he ranked sixth at 141 lbs. McGraw is the defending EIWA champion and a two-time NCAA qualifier at 141 lbs.
Also garnering rankings were seniors Mason Lenhard (19th in 125 lbs.) and Marcus Schontube (11th in 197 lbs.). Lenhard, a two-time first-team All-Ivy League honoree, returns to the mat for the first time in two seasons. As a freshman he was dubbed the 2001 Ivy League Rookie of the Year and won an EIWA title. Schontube, a NCAA qualifier last season, placed second at the 2004 EIWA Championships and posted a 23-11 record.
Two-time defending national champion Oklahoma State was tabbed the top team, while Lehigh, Nebraska, Iowa State and Iowa rounded out the top five. Aside from Lehigh, Cornell, 11th, is the only EIWA team seeded above Penn.
The Red and Blue open the 2004-05 campaign on Nov. 13 at the Brockport Oklahoma Gold, in Brockport, N.Y. The Quakers open their season at home on Nov. 20 at the 10th Annual Keystone Classic at The Palestra.
