PHILADELPHIA - The Ivy League has announced its All-Ivy teams for the 2006 men's lacrosse season, and four Penn players have been recognized. The teams are voted on by the conference's seven head coaches.
Senior defender Andrew Blechman received second-team honors. It is the second year in a row that Blechman has received All-Ivy honors; he was an honorable mention selection in 2005. One of three third-year starters on close defense, Blechman helped Penn put together a 7.90 goals-against average, one of the stingiest in the country. He came up with 11 ground balls and also had nine caused turnovers.
Senior attackman D.J. Andrzejewski was an honorable mention All-Ivy selection, the third-straight year he has been so recognized. This year, he led the Quakers in all three scoring categories with 26 goals, 13 assists and 39 points. He also came up with 15 ground balls, and four of his goals were game-winners. Andrzejewski was among the Ivy League leaders in the three scoring categories all year, and he scored at least one goal in all but one game.
In the midfield, senior Alan Eberstein and junior David Cornbrooks also earned honorable mention. Eberstein was Penn's face-off specialist this season, taking 212 of the Quakers' 274 draws this season and compiling a .505 win percentage at the X. In addition, Eberstein was third on the team in scoring (11 goals and 12 assists for 23 points) and easily led the squad with 64 ground balls. Cornbrooks, meanwhile, finished the regular season fourth on the team with 19 points (18 goals, 1 assist) and scored in nine of Penn's 13 games this season.
Under fourth-year head coach Brian Voelker, Penn finished the regular season with a 10-3 overall record, its best mark since 1988, and the Quakers' 4-2 Ivy League record was its best in the conference since 1989. The Red and Blue head to Baltimore this weekend to take on defending national champion Johns Hopkins in the first round of the 2006 NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championship. Faceoff at Homewood Field is slated for Saturday at 1 p.m.
