PRINCETON, N.J. -Junior Jillian Hart and seniors Victoria Strickland, Laura Steel and Kristen Judge all scored for the University of Pennsylvania women's track and field team at Weaver Stadium for the ECAC Championships in Princeton, N.J., Sunday.
Of the 46 teams that scored at the meet, the Red and Blue finished 32nd with eight points. Duke won the 2012 ECAC team title with 77.5 points, while Connecticut was the runner-up with 59 points.
Hart had the highest finish of the meet for the Quakers. She tied for third with a mark of 3.78 meters (12 feet, 4 3/4 inches) in the pole vault. She cleared the first two heights on her first try and with the bar raised to 3.88 meters, Hart nearly set a new personal best in the event prior to gaining another 5.5 points for Penn. Junior Davielle Brown was just out of the scoring with a 10th-place finish of 3.68 meters (12-00.75 ft.).
Strickland earned a point in the 800 meters. She reached the finals with a time of 2:08.84 and then finished eighth in the championship race with a similar time. Strickland finished her two laps in 2:08.98 on Sunday.
Steel garnered another point for the Red and Blue in the 3,000 meters. She nearly matched her career-best effort from a week ago at the Heptagonal Championships. Steel was one of nine competitors to break the 10-minute barrier - which she did for the second time in her career - and finished eighth with a mark of 9:54.44.
Judge was tied for seventh in the high jump. With the first bar set at 1.70 meters (5 feet, 7 inches), Judge cleared it on her first attempt. Only six of the 35 competitors cleared the next height as Judge just missed on matching her own school record.
In the 100 meters, senior Emily Townsend was 15th with a time of 12.25. She reached the ECAC final with a mark of 12.15 in the preliminaries. Sophomore Gabrielle Piper was 20th with a mark of 12.32. Piper was also 13th in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.28.
Senior Leah Brown was 23rd in the 200 meters at 25.09, while senior Paige Madison was fifth in the preliminaries of the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:00.11.
The 4x100-meter relay was 19th with a finish of 47.73 and the 4x800-meter relay was 11th at 9:08.15.
In the other field events, senior Catherine Okoukoni was 15th in the triple jump with a mark of 11.95 meters (39-02.50 ft.). Junior Morgan Wheeler was 10th at 42.15 meters (138-03 ft.).
Next up, in each event, the top 48 times and marks in the East region qualify for the first round of the NCAA Championships. The full list of qualifiers will be announced in the upcoming week.
