World Rowing U-23 Championships
PHILADELPHIA - Daren Frankel, ENG '13, was selected to the USA Under-23 Heavyweight team eariler this week and will compete in the men's eight at the World Rowing U-23 Championships in Linz, Austria, July 24-28.
Frankel, whorecently finished his four-year career as a member of the Penn heavyweights, was invited to the U.S. Rowing Under-23 National Team Selection Camp at Brown University. The camp selected the men’s eight and four crews which will compete at the World Championships. The United States won three medals at the 2012 World Rowing Under-23 Championships, including gold in the men’s eight and silver in the men’s four with coxswain.
In his final season at Penn, Frankel consistently held the fifth seat for the Quakers Varsity Eight boat. Penn posted its best finish at EARC Sprints since 2007 with 10th-place row in the Varsity Eight and qualified for the IRA regatta where they won the Third Final.
A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Frankel is the first Penn heavyweight to compete in the U-23 World Championships since Neil McPeak, W'09, in 2009 inRacice, Czech Republic.
Frankel will also be joined by a trio of other Penn rowers at the World Under-23 Championships. Parker Lange (USA) and Jaques David (Australia) of the lightweights and Jenna Hebert (USA) of the women's rowing team will also be the Quakers, in addition to lightweights assistant Colin Farrell, who is coaching the men's lightweight 4- boat.
