Freshman 8 Advances to Grand Final at IRA Regatta

Camden, N.J. – The heavyweight freshman eight advanced to the Grand Final 2005 IRA Regatta this afternoon on the Cooper River. The second varsity advanced to the Petite Final while the varsity advanced to the Third Level Final.

The freshman eight posted a time of 6:23.19 in the first semifinal to finish in second place behind Cal (6:14.05). The Quakers also edged out Princeton who clocked a time of 6:23.54 to finish third. Penn will face Washington, Cal, Harvard, Princeton and Boston University in tomorrow’s Grand Final slated to begin at 12:42 p.m.

In the second varsity eight, the Red and Blue recorded a time of 6:29.98 for a fifth-place finish in the first semifinal. Cal took the semifinal in a time of 6:02.27 followed by Wisconsin (6:03.57), Northeastern (6:12.17) and Princeton (6:16.3). Penn will face crews from Boston University, Princeton, Harvard, Syracuse and Navy in the Petite Final set to begin at 12:54 p.m.

In the varsity eight, Penn placed second in the third semifinal with a time of 6:12.73 to advance to the Third Level Final. Syracuse placed first with a mark of 6:08.29, while Penn finished ahead of Wisconsin (6:14.33), Columbia (6:18.73), Holy Cross (6:18.77), and MIT (6:44.38). The Quakers will face Cornell, Syracuse, Rutgers, Dartmouth and Wisconsin in the Third Level Final beginning at1:33 p.m.
