ITHACA, N.Y. - Seniors Brian Rosenthal and Brian Fulton highlighted Day One of the 2012 Heptagonal Indoor Championships for the University of Pennsylvania men's track and field team. Both advanced to Championship Sunday in their respective events at Cornell's Barton Hall on Saturday afternoon.
Only four events were completed on Day One and Princeton has the early lead with 49 points. The majority of the finals will take place on Sunday. At Heps, the top eight advance past the preliminaries and the top-six finishers will score in the finals of each event on Championship Sunday.
Rosenthal found his way into Championship Sunday in an individual event with an eight-place finish in the 400 meters. He was second in his heat with a time of 50.82 and that mark stood up by six-hundreths of a second to qualify him for the finals.
Fulton, who ranks ninth all-time at Penn in the indoor 800 meters, was one of the eight to qualify for the Heptagonal finals in the event. He advanced to the final day of competition with a time of 1:54.10. That placed him sixth overall in the preliminary race.
Freshman Thomas Tallerico missed qualifying for the finals in the 800 meters by just one second. He placed 10th out of the 19 competitors with a time of 1:55.13.
Sunday's first event is the 60-meter hurdles at 11 a.m. and concludes with the 4x400-meter relay finals at 3:35 p.m. The awards ceremony, where the 2012 Heptagonal Indoor championship team will officially be crowned, is set to take place at 4:15 p.m.
