PHILADELPHIA - The Ivy League has announced its weekly awards for men's basketball, and Penn freshman guard Harrison Gaines was named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week.
This is the second time Gaines has earned the honor this season; he was Co-Rookie of the Week on Nov.27 along with Brown's Peter Sullivan. Overall, a Penn player has won the Rookie of the Week award eight times this season, out of 11 times that it has been given.
Gaines received the weekly honor following a pair of standout performances at Columbia and Cornell over the weekend. Friday night in New York City, he recorded eight points, a rebound, an assist and a steal. That merely set the stage for his effort on Saturday night, when he was matched up with Cornell's Louis Dale. Gaines responded by scoring 19 points, and also dished out seven assists without committinga turnover.
Penn is back in action Tuesday night, hosting Princeton at 7 p.m. That is the first of three home games the Quakers will play this weekend, as Brown and Yale come to The Palestra Friday and Saturday, respectively.
