PHILADELPHIA - Senior Mark Gannon was selected as team captain of the 2012-13 University of Pennsylvania men's lightweight rowing team on Thursday, as announced by fourth-year head coach Nick Baker. Senior Alan Chan will take on the duties as the team's commodore for the upcoming season.

"I was really excited when the team elected both Mark and Alan," Baker said. "Mark served as commodore last year so he has some experience in leadership roles. As a rising senior, he has contributed quite a bit to our team thus far and I'm really excited about what he can do as captain."

Gannon has already spent the majority of the past two seasons in the varsity eight boat. The Conshohocken, Pa., native sat in the bow seat throughout his sophomore campaign. Then last season, he split between the two or three seat for the varsity eight, and at times, also owned the seven seat for the second varsity.

"I just want to be a good example to the younger guys on the team and the incoming freshmen," Gannon said. "My goal has always been to leave this team in a better position than when I came here. I'm just going to keep putting my best effort out there everyday."

The commodore has been following a similar path to Gannon. Following his rookie season in the freshman boat, Chan spent all of last season in the bow seat for the second varsity. As a sophomore, he was consistently in the second seat for the second varsity.

"This senior class is by far the hardest working class we've had since I've been here, and Mark and Alan are the two hardest working guys on the team," Baker added. "So I'm just excited to see how they transition that individual work ethic on to the team."

A complete fall schedule for Gannon, Chan and the 2012-13 Quakers will be announced later this month. The team will return to campus in the coming weeks.
