Getting to Know: Assistant Coach Kara Cassidy

PHILADELPHIA - Penn women's basketball assistant coach Kara Cassidy is entering her first season with the Penn women's basketball team. Here's an opportunity to get to know more about the Quinippiac alum and her thoughts on her first few months at Penn.

What is your Favorite aspect of Penn?

Coach Cassidy:
My favorite aspect of Penn is the campus. The campus is so unique. It offers you the best of both worlds by offering a small college campus feel in a major city. The architecture is amazing and everything is the highest quality! Locust Walk is something everyone needs to see for themselves!

When did you know you wanted to coach basketball?

Coach Cassidy: I have been part of a team my whole life and I can't imagine life any other way. I thought about coaching often while in college but decided it was for me one year after graduation. I was talking to my coach--who is my mentor--and she asked me to come back to my alma mater to be her assistant coach.

What do you love most about coaching?

Coach Cassidy: I love recruiting and watching our players grow over the course of their college career. It is so great to meet so many unbelievable young adults. I love watching them work hard, mature and succeed--not just on the court, but in life.

What are your thoughts on Head Coach Mike McLaughlin?

Coach Cassidy: Mike has been amazing to work for so far. I have already learned so much from him in the last four months. I am so anxious to continue to learn from him. He is such a real person and cares about his team. He will help them in everyway he can.

What are you most looking forward to once the season begins?

Coach Cassidy: I am so excited to coach in the Palestra!

What is your most memorable moment as a collegiate athlete?

Coach Cassidy: Coming home as a freshmen to play LaSalle in front of my family and friends for the first time and upsetting them!

As a coach and player you've seen countless basketball arenas. Where does The Palestra rank?

Coach Cassidy: The Palestra is at the top of the list. The nostalgia is amazing. I can't believe its my home court.

What is your favorite thing aboutPhiladelphia?

Coach Cassidy: The history as well as the professional sports teams and their passion.

Who makes the best cheesesteak in Philadelphia?

Coach Cassidy: There are so many I love. I've never found one I didn't like, but I guess I'd say Geno's! Coach Laukaitis gets Pat's, I get Geno's and then we share.

What are some of the things that you enjoy outside of basketball?

Coach Cassidy: I love going to and watching professional sporting events, traveling (when I find the time) and spending time with my family and friends!
