PHILADELPHIA - Freshman Matt Gotschall had two impressive outings last week and was rewarded by being named the Big 5 Pitcher of the Week and the Ivy League Co-Pitcher and Co-Rookie of the Week on Tuesday.
Gotschall dominated in his first career start against Georgetown, allowing just two hits over eight innings of work. He gave up just one run, a solo homer, and also struck out eight batters while walking just three. His next appearance was just as good, coming on in relief against Georgetown and finishing the final 7.1 innings of the game without allowing a run and just three singles. Only one runner reached third during the game and he extended his scoreless inning streak to 12.1 innings.
He is the second straight Quaker to earn Big 5 honors, as Jeremy Maas was named Player of the Week last week. Gotschall is the first Penn pitcher to be named Pitcher of the Week since Chris McNulty was name Ivy Co-Pitcher of the week last April, and the first to earn Ivy Rookie of the Weeks, since McNulty earned the honor back in 2009.
The Quakers are in action against Temple on Tuesday at 3 p.m. Live stats and a live blog will be available for the game.
