PHILADELPHIA - Junior guard Brian Grandieri (Media, Pa.) was named the Ivy League Player of the Week in men's basketball. The announcement was made Tuesday morning by the Ivy League conference office.
Grandieri is the third different Penn player to be honored by the Ivy League this season; Ibrahim Jaaber was the Ivy League Player of the Week on November 27, and Mark Zoller earned the award one week later.
Grandieri had a great weekend as Penn swept the dreaded Cornell-Columbia road trip to open the Ivy League season. He began the weekend Friday night with a game-high 18 points -- one shy of his career high -- along with four rebounds and two assists as the Quakers defeated Cornell, 74-56. Eight of his points against the Big Red came in a game-deciding 18-2 run that allowed Penn to pull away.
Saturday night in New York City, Grandieri finished with 14 points -- 10 of them in the first half when he hit all four of his shots -- eight rebounds, an assist and a steal as Penn downed Columbia, 69-43. His night was punctuated when he hit a shot just inside half-court at the end of the half, giving Penn a 37-23 lead going into the break.
For the weekend, Grandieri shot 14-of-22 from the field (63.6 percent).
