Grapplers Advance to Semifinals with 37-2 Win over Drexel

Hampton, Va. – The Penn wrestling team defeated Drexel for the second time in less than a month on Friday afternoon, 37-2, at the Virginia Duals. This afternoon’s match had the same result as last month, but this time the Quakers did it in dominating fashion, winning nine of 10 matches against their crosstown rival and earning bonus points in five matches.

Junior Matt Herrington pinned Nick Kozar in 1:10 for his second fall of the afternoon at 174 pounds. Classmate and captain Matt Valenti won his 133-pound match by technical fall, 18-3. Valenti, who is ranked seventh in the nation, had three nearfall points and accumulated over three minutes of riding time. Freshman Cesar Grajales defeated Bill Martin, 15-5, at 141 pounds and earned four team points. Senior captain Dustin Wiles won his 184-pound match by major decision, 16-4. He scored three takedowns in the third period over Brian Stouffer to secure bonus points. Classmate and fellow captain Paul Velekei was tied with John Oplinger before Oplinger injury defaulting, giving Penn six more points on the board.

In the first match of the day senior Mike Silengo defeated. No. 18 Steve Mytych, 4-3. Mytych is the second ranked opponent, Silengo has defeated in the last three weeks. He defeated No. 10 Tanner Gardner of Stanford at the Midlands. Silengo scored in the first period with a takedown and secured the win when he escaped in the third. Freshman Matt Dragon won his match at 149 pounds, defeating Chris Renninger, 8-3. Sophomore Lior Zamir shutout Scott Hunter, 4-0 and rookie Jack Sullivan made his dual meet debut at 285 pounds and picked up a 4-3 win over Chris Cowen.

Drexel’s lone win came at 157 pounds when Ryan Hluschak defeated Gene Zannetti, 10-5. The Dragons had one team point deducted for a coaches warning.

Penn faces Ohio State in the semifinals on Saturday at 2 p.m. The winner will move on to the finals against the winner of No. 15 Indiana/Chattanooga.
