Hampton, Va. - The University of Pennsylvania wrestling team defeated North Dakota State University, 38-3, by winning nine of the 10 matches, including seven by bonus points to move on to the second round of the Virginia Duals.
Senior Mike Silengo set the pace for the match at 125 pounds with a 17-3 win over Mike Meger. Silengo have three two-point nearfalls in the third period to put the match away. Junior captain Matt Valenti followed suit with a 15-3 major decision over Eric Sanders. , who is raked seventh by The Wrestling Mall and W.I.N. Magazine, used five takedowns, a three-point nearfall and over three minutes of riding time to secure bonus points. Freshmen Cesar Grajales at 141 pounds and Matt Dragon (ranked as high as 14th) at 149 pounds took their matches by major decision, winning 12-4 and 12-1, respectively. Junior Gene Zannetti, who is ranked 19th in three polls, won his bout at 157 pounds, 9-6 to give Penn a 19-0 lead. Sophomore Lior Zamir picked up the Quakers’ fifth major decision with a 11-3 victory at 165 pounds.
Back-to-back falls by junior Matt Herrington at 174 pounds and senior Dustin Wiles at 184 pounds put the Red and Blue up 35-0. Herrington pinned Matt Herman in 3:39 seconds and Wiles, who is ranked as high as 15th in the nation, finished his opponent of in 5:43. Senior Paul Velekei picked up another Penn victory with a 3-2 win over Jacob Brucy, which turned out to be the closest match of the day. The Bison picked up their only win of the day at 285 pounds when Mike Marish defeated Penn’s Jayson Bowlsby, 12-5.
The No. 25 Quakers will take on Drexel at 3 p.m. today. Drexel advanced to the second round with a 19-16 win over Virginia. The Quakers and Dragons met last month at The Palestra where Penn picked up a 21-15 win.
