Gymnastics Announces 2012 Schedule

Gymnastics Schedule

PHILADELPHIA - Gymnastics won the Ivy Classic and finished second at the ECAC Championships a season ago. It will look to build on that success with a very similar schedule in the 2012 season. The Quakers will take part in 11 regular season meets in 2012, four of which will be in Penn's home gym. Most notably, Penn will be hosting the 2012 ECAC Championships in The Palestra.

The season gets underway with the intrasquad meet on Dec. 2. The first official competition of the 2012 campaign will see the Quakers travel to Washington, D.C. and take part in the George Washington/Lindsay Ferris Invitational on Jan. 15.

The first chance to see Penn gymnastics in home competition will come on Jan. 20 when it hosts Rutgers in Hutchinson Gymnasium. Following the meet with Rutgers, Penn will be back on the road for two more meets against Ivy League opponents. First, the Quakers travel to Yale on Jan. 28. The next Saturday they will travel to Cornell on Feb. 4.

After the two road meets, Penn will host a home quad-meet Feb. 10. Wilson, Brockport, and New Hampshire will be the other three teams in attendance. The following week, the Quakers will have their final test before the Ivy Classic as they take part in the Towson Invitational on Feb. 18.

The following Sunday, Feb. 26, Penn will be looking to defend its Ivy Classic title. This year the Ivy Classic will be hosted by Cornell. The last time Penn won consecutive Ivy Classics was in 2001, which was the last in a string of five straight Ivy Classic Championships for the Quakers.

After the Ivy Classic, Penn returns home for a meet with Southern Connecticut on Mar. 3. Penn will then be on the road again the final two weekends before the ECAC Championships. On Mar. 11, the team will travel to Maryland and on Mar. 16 it will take part in a quad-meet at Towson. George Washington and Yale will also be in attendance this weekend.

On Saturday, Mar. 24 the ECAC Championships will come to The Palestra. That meet will get underway at noon. Last season, Penn finished second at the ECAC Championships, being edged out by Cornell. The last time Penn won the ECAC Championships was in 2004.

Apr. 7 will be the NCAA Regional tournament in Raleigh, N.C. for any teams and individuals that qualify. Apr. 12-14 will be the USAG Collegiate Nationals which the Quakers qualified for in 2011. The gymnastics season concludes with the NCAA Championships from Apr. 20-22 at the Duluth Center in Georgia for all national qualifiers.

Penn returns eight letterwinners from a squad that recorded a program-best 18 wins in 2011. Junior Dana Bonincontri returns to Penn for her third season after qualifying for the NCAA Regionals last season and missing the national championships by just 15-hundreths of a point. Fellow junior Kirsten Strausbaugh also returns after being named an alternate to the NCAA regionals in 2011. At the USAG Championships, Bonincontri and Strausbaugh each earned multiple USAG All-America honors.
