Gymnastics Defeated by Ball State


PHILADELPHIA--The Quakers opened their season with a loss to Ball State, 190.725-184.350 at Hutchinson Gym, Friday. Senior Jordan Brewer scored a37.650 in the all around to lead the Quakers.

"It was a good warm-up," said head coach John Ceralde. "The routines looked good, but some unexpected injuries kept us from where we should have been."

The Quakers got contributions from all five freshmen. Megan Metsgar scored a 36.700 in the all around while Cari Hayes, Laura DiPaolo, Rebecca Engberg and Katie Graham all competed in at least one rotation.

In the first rotation, Penn scored a 46.975 in the vault. Brewer and Laura DiPaolo both scored 9.500 to lead the group. Next on the uneven bars, standout Marissa Rosen scored a 9.500 in her only event of the day. Brewer also scored a 9.500. The bars was the only event in whichless than three freshmen were in the line-up for the Quakers.On the balance beam, senior Sarah Parsons impressed with a 9.625, the Quakers highest score of the day in any event. In their final rotation, the Quakers were halted by the floor exercise. Newcomer Megan Metsgar took the high score in the event with a 9.150.

Sophomore Elise Bowe also completed the all around with a score of 36.225.

For Ball State, Nicki Sleeper took the high score of the day with a 9.875 on the vault. Teresa Phipps won the all around with a 38.325.

The Quakers are back in action Saturday, Jan. 17 at 1 p.m. to take on Yale in the Ivy opener at Hutchinson Gym.
