PHILADELPHIA – It was about as close as it can be in scoring Sunday afternoon, as the University of Pennsylvania women’s gymnastics team edged West Chester, Cornell, and Ursinus to claim the Penn quad-meet inside The Palestra.
Penn finished on top with a 190.900, but not far behind were their competitors, with West Chester scoring a 190.725, Cornell a 190.625, and Ursinus a 190.475.
The Quakers trailed almost the entire way, but were able to pull through with a strong team performance on floor, posting a 48.525 – their best score of the season, claiming the meet in the final event. Junior Elyse Shenberger and freshman Megan Finck posted the top score on floor for the Red and Blue, both receiving a 9.800.
Shenberger also led Penn on bars, scoring a 9.800, claiming the top performance in the meet on the event. The two 9.800 scores for Shenberger on floor and bars are her best of the season in those events.
Falling in directly behind Shenberger on bars was freshman Emily Shugan,scoring a 9.725, and helping the Quakers to a 47.950 team score.
Penn scored a 47.250 on beam and was led by junior Amber Hu with a 9.700. On vault, the Quakers posteda 47.175, led by junior Morgan Venuti with a 9.625.
West Chester ended the day with a 48.275 on vault, 47.050 on bars, 47.275 on beam, and 48.125 on floor. The Golden Rams’ Majesta Valentine led all gymnasts on floor, scoring a 9.825, and finished first amongst the three all-around performers with a 38.375.
Cornell finished with a 48.325 on vault, 46.800 on bars, 47.550 on beam and 47.950 on floor. The Big Red’s Sara Schupp finished in the top spot individually on vault, with a 9.800.
In positing a 190.475, Ursinus finished the day with a new school record for team score, and scored a 47.975 on vault, 46.375 on bars, 47.900 on beam, and 48.225 on floor. Teammates Kaelin Ruoss and Kristina Steffenhagan tied for the top individual spot on beam, scoring a 9.775.
Up next, Penn will host intra-city rival Temple on Saturday, Feb. 7 inside Rockwell Gym (Hutchinson Gymnasium), beginning at 12 p.m.
