Gymnastics Falls to Rutgers in Opener

PHILADELPHIA - Despite earning the top individual score in all four events, the Penn gymnastics team fell to Rutgers in its season-opening competition Saturday afternoon at Hutchinson Gym.

The Scarlet Knights -- competing for the second time this season -- scored 189.525 points and defeated the Quakers, who had 186.525. Penn outscored Rutgers on the bars, with a 48.00 to 47.30, but the Scarlet Knights prevailedin every other competition.

For Penn, sophomore Marissa Rosen finished with 38.95 as an all-around competitor. Shealso recorded the top overall score foreither teamon the bars (9.80), the beam (9.775) and the floor exercise (9.825).

Junior Jordan Brewerwas thetop overallfinisher on the vault (9.70), and scored 37.875 for the all-around. Two other women were all-around competitors for the Quakers Saturday -- freshman Elise Bowe (37.075) and senior Stephanie Ortiz (34.75).

Penn is back in action next Saturday, hosting Towson at Hutchinson Gym beginning at 1 p.m.
