Gymnastics Finishes Second at Liberty Classic


PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania gymnastics team traveled cross-town Saturday to take part in the Liberty Classic Invitational at Temple. Penn finished second to Temple in the five-team meet. Temple bested the Quakers a week after Penn beat them at Hutchinson Gym.

Temple finished first with a 190.150. Penn came in second with a total score of 187.175, followed by Ursinus (185.475), Bridgeport (180.575) and West Chester (175.625). The Quakers three victories improves their record to 5-4 overall.

Penn was led by Lauren Markowitz on the vault. She had the meets highest score with a 9.650. Stephanie Ortiz had the Red and Blue’s second-best score with a 9.525. For the event, Penn scored a 47.175.

On the bars, the Quakers scored a 46.675. Marissa Rosen finished third overall with a score of 9.675. Lizzie Lowe came in fifth with a 9.500.

Penn struggled on the beam, scoring a 46.200, however sophomore Jordan Brewer picked up the Quakers, scoring a 9.650, which tied for the meets best score. The Red and Blue rebounded on the floor exercise, scoring a 47.125. Sarah Wexler and Brewer led the Quakers. Wexler scored a 9.700 (tied for third-best) and Brewer came in fifth with a 9.675. Rosen also had a stellar performance on the floor, garnering a 9.600.

Rosen and Ortiz came in second and third, respectively, in the all-around competition. Rosen scored a 37.950, while Ortiz finished with a 36.925.

Penn is in action next Saturday when they host Ursinus, West Chester and Wilson at Hutchinson Gym at noon.
