COLLEGE PARK, Md. The University of Pennsylvania gymnastics team finished third inits season opener Friday night, thefirst meet under new head coach John Ceralde. The Quakersplacedbehind Maryland and Towsonwith 181.825 points, whichwere not enough to upstage the Terps, 191.750, or the Tigers, 189.225.
Freshman Marissa Rosen highlighted Penn’s night in her collegiate debut, finishing second in the all-around with a score of 37.875. Junior Stephanie Ortiz placed seventh with a 35.525.
Penn finished third in all four events. In the vault, the Red and Blue scored a 46.725. On bars, the Quakers scored a 43.975, led by Rosen’s 9.70 andsixth-place finish.
The Quakers scored a 45.700 on the beam. Stefanie Navarro came in fifth with a 9.425, while Sarah Wexler finished seventh with a 9.735. On the floor exercise, Penn scored a 45.425. Rosen had the Quakers' highest finish of the night, tying for third with a 9.65.
The Red and Blue open their home slate next Saturday, hosting Yale at 1 p.m. in Hutchinson Gym.
