Gymnastics Gets First Win of Season over Yale


PHILADLEPHIA – In their first home meet of the 2007 season, the University of Pennsylvania gymnastics team edged Yale Saturday, 187.050-183.950, at Hutchinson Gym to give head coach John Ceralde his first win with the Quakers. Penn (1-2) lost the vault, but won the other three events. Freshman Marissa Rosen (37.825) and junior Stephanie Ortiz (37.050) led the way for the Quakers finishing first and second respectively in the all around competition.

Penn totaled 46.700 on the vault, but Yale (0-4) scored a 47.275 to take the event. Despite losing, sophomore Jordan Brewer (9.600) and Rosen (9.575) had the two highest scores.

The Red and Blue dominated on the bars, taking the event 46.850-43.750. In the process, Penn also had the four highest scores, led by Kimberly Chin’s 9.600. On the beam, Penn narrowly defeated the Bulldogs, 46.075-46.050. The Quakers first two competitors, Stefanie Navarro (9.400) and Chin (9.500), had the two highest scores. Ortiz and Rosen both scored 9.025’s to secure the beam.

Rosen closed out her day with a 9.825 on the floor. Brewer had the next best score for the Red and Blue with a 9.550 to give Penn a 47.425-46.875 win on the floor.

Penn remains home next Saturday when they host Temple and Towson at Hutchinson Gym at 1 p.m.
