Gymnastics Heads to Brown

PHILADELPHIA - After getting its midweek meet with Wilson, West Chester, and Ursinus suspended due to the weather, the Penn gymnastics team will finally be back in action Sunday when they face Ivy foe Brown University and the University of Bridgeport at 4 p.m. in Providence R.I.

The Quakers hope to earn their first first-place finish of the season this weekend. In Penn's most recent competition, the Red and Blue placed third out of four teams with a score of 181.200 at Temple's Liberty Classic last Sunday. Penn's best cumulative score this season is a 185.100, achieved Jan. 23 versus Rutgers.

With a 9.675, sophomore Laura DiPaolo holds Penn's top vault score. Junior Elise Bowe's 9.575 on bars, senior Jenny Hurst's 9.725 on beam, and senior Lucy la Cour's 9.700 on floor are all team bests this year. Bowe also holds the Red and Blue's top numbers in all-around with a 37.150, attained in their most recent meet.

Brown also seeks its first top finish, earning three second-place finishes. Coming off their best score of the season, 187.275, the Bears compete tonight versus the University of New Hampshire before hosting on Sunday.

Sporting the title, 2009 USA Gymnastics Collegiate Co-National Champions, Bridgeport has proven itself to be a very strong contender. In their most recent meet, the Purple Knights took first place in a five-team meet hosted by Southern Connecticut State on Feb. 6. They boast a 191.050 as their best score this season. UB will go for a scenic drive before the meet with Penn and Brown, competing in the Cornell Big Red Invitational Saturday in Ithaca, N.Y. Bridgeport shares last year's National Champion title with Cornell.
