PHILADELPHIA - Returning to the University of Pennsylvania and The Palestra, the Penn gymnastics program is proud to host the 2015 Ivy Classic this Sunday, Feb. 22 at 1 p.m.
The one day event features the host Quakers, Brown, Cornell, and Yale competing for the Ivy Classic championship. In 2014, host Brown claimed the title with a 193.375 team score, followed by Yale, Penn and Cornell.
Tickets for the 2015 Ivy Classic are on sale now, and will be sold at The Palestra box office the day of the event. Doors will open at 11 a.m. on Sunday. Fans can watch the Ivy Classic live on the Ivy League Digital Network.
SCOUTING BROWN: The Bears had to wait until Monday evening to compete this past weekend, and it was worth the wait, posting their highest score of the season, 194.000. Junior Diana Walters led Brown on Monday competing as an all-around scoring a 9.775 on vault, 9.850 on bars, 9.750 on beam, and 9.750 on floor.
SCOUTING CORNELL: The Big Red enter the weekend having recorded its best team score this season, 192.700, a weekend ago. The season-high score is two points better than previous highs of 190.625. Cornell was led by freshman Lauren Wong on bars, 9.800, and junior Alicia Bair on vault, 9.725, in its last meet versus Rutgers, Maryland, and Ursinus.
SCOUTING PENN: The Quakers are coming off their best team performance of the season, scoring a 193.775 at Towson last Saturday. Penn tallied its second highest mark in program history on beam with a 49.025 led by senior Amanda Schalefer with a career-high 9.850. Competing in three events as a freshman, Megan Finck, a two-time ECAC Rookie of the Week recipient has consistently performed well on floor, bars, and vault for the Red and Blue. Penn has finished in first-place, in three of five meets this season.
SCOUTING YALE: The Bulldogs finished third last weekend at the Navy Pier Quad Meet in Chicago, with a 190.750. Yale was led by senior Joyce Li on bars, 9.775, and freshman Anna Merkuryev on vault, 9.750. The best overall team score recorded for Yale this season came in its own Don Tonry Bulldog Invitational, scoring a 191.375.
2014 IVY CLASSIC: Host Brown took home the championship for the second-straight year in 2014, with a 193.375 team score. Yale finished second with a 190.250, Penn third with a 190.150, and Cornell fourth with a 190.025. Returning individual event champions this year include Brown sophomore Caroline Morant on vault, Yale senior Morgan Traina on beam, and Brown senior Danielle Hoffman on floor. Brown junior Diana Walters also returns as the reigning all-around champion.
LAST TIME PENN HOSTED: Penn last hosted the Ivy Classic in 2011, winning the event with a 191.950 team score, a full point ahead of second place Cornell. That year, individual Quaker gymnasts claimed top honors in the all-around, vault, and floor, while Cornell gymnasts claimed top honors on beam and bars. Penn would go on to win the title in 2012 also, the last time the Red and Blue won the Ivy Classic.
