PHILADELPHIA Sunday afternoon Penn will host the 31st edition of the Ivy Classic. The event, which features Penn, Brown, Cornell and Yale, takes place at The Palestra at 1 p.m.
The Quakers have faced Cornell and Yale this season, but have not yet seen the Bears; Penn bested the Bulldogs in January, Cornell finished ahead of the Red and Blue by two points last weekend at the Towson Invitational.
A year ago, Cornell edged Penn by two-tenths of a point to claim the title. The Big Red’s score of 188.25 just beat Penn’s 188.05, while Yale was right behind in third with 187.675. The host Bears finished fourth with a 185.5.
Lauren Markowitz was the star of the day for the Quakers, winning the individual vaultingtitle with a 9.650. Jordan Brewer finished third on vault (9.55) and beam (9.675).
Penn has eight Ivy Classic titles, including four consecutive from 1997 to 2000. The Quakers last title was in 2004, a year in which they also won the ECAC Championship.
This season Penn boasts an 8-5 overall record, including wins over Temple, Ursinus and James Madison last weekend. The Quakers were powered by a solid all-around performance from sophomore Stephanie Ortiz. She scored a 37.60, which was good enough for second place. Penn also received solid performances on the bars as Kimberly Chin (9.725) and Stefanie Navarro (9.675) finished third and fifth, respectively.
