PHILADELPHIA - The ECAC released its first batch of weekly awards on Monday, and Penn was represented twice. Sophomore Marissa Rosen was chose as Gymnast of the Week for the week ending January 16. Junior Kerri Lutfey was selected as Specialist of the Week.
For Rosen, the selection marks the fourth time she has been honored by the ECAC. In her first season in the Red and Blue, she was chosen as Gymnast of the Week once (1/12/07) and as Rookie of the Week twice (2/7/07 and 3/8/07).
She was chosen as the 2008 season's first recipient based off her performance in Penn's first meet of the campaign against Rutgers. Rosen won three individual events - bars (9.800), beam (9.775) and floor (9.825). Her all-around score of 38.950 tied the fifth-highest score in Quaker history. She now holds three of the five highest all-around scores recorded by a Penn gymnast, only three meets into her sophomore season.
Lutfey earned recognition as specialist of the week for her performance on the beam. Shaking off an injury that she incurred in warmups, Lutfey was first on the beam for Penn and gutted her way to a 9.325 - the second-highest score for Penn on that day. Her score helped the Quakers win that event by .700 of a point. This was her first league honor.
Penn's gymnasts are back in action on Saturday, February 2 as they travel to Ithaca, N.Y. to take on Cornell at noon.
