Gymnastics Travels to Cornell

PHILADELPHIA – Penn heads to Ithaca, N.Y. this weekend for a gymnastics meet with Ivy League rival Cornell. The Quakers enter the meet looking for their first win of the 2008 season. Their 0-3 record includes losses to Rutgers, Towson and Yale. The Big Red have had one dual meet in ’08, defeating Cortland St., 185.150 – 183.500, last weekend.

While the team has yet to break into the win column, the Quakers have seen individuals perform at a high level all season. Three women have been recognized by the ECAC for their performances so far in 2008. Most recently, Jordan Brewer was named co-Coach’s Choice of the Week for the period ending January 30. In the meet against Yale, she extended her three-meet winning streak in the vault with a 9.575. She also tied for first on the beam with a 9.625. Other Quakers that have been honored so far include sophomore Marissa Rosen (Gymnast of the Week – 1/13) and junior Kerri Lutfey (Specialist of the Weet – 1/13).

Cornell has seen freshman Irene Leung acclimate herself well to collegiate competition, winning two events in last week’s meet – bars (9.400) and vault (9.55) – on her way to an all-around win (37.725). Junior Stacey Ohara, the reigning ECAC beam champion, is coming off a win on the beam (9.625).

This meet will provide both teams with a gauge as to where they stand heading into the Ivy Classic, also at Cornell, on February 24.
