PHILADELPHIA - Sarah Hasson's two first half goals and Laurel McGarvie's hat trick gave the Quaker field hockey team its highest scoring game this season as Penn came away with the win Sunday afternoon in Loretto, Pa. The 5-0 shutout improved the Quakers' record to 4-8 as Saint Francis fell to 1-12.
Penn took command just over a minute and a half into the game when Hasson netted her first goal of the afternoon unassisted. Four minutes later she got her second, helped by senior Kelsey Tahan, for an early 2-0 lead.
McGarvie got into the scoring action in the 14th minute on a pass from Katie Burke. With a comfortable 3-0 lead and 6-2 shot advantage the Quakers went into the locker room.
The second half was just as successful as the first with McGarvie netting two more goals, for a career high three total. The last time Penn scored five or more goals in a game was Sept. 29, 2007 when they defeated Dartmouth 5-1.
Kieran Sweeney and Kat Muller split the game in the cage. Sweeney made two saves in the first half and Muller made one in the second, allowing a combined zero goals.
Up next Penn hosts Drexel Wednesday at 7:15 p.m. for another non-conference game.
