PHILADELPHIA – Sam Hayward scored the biggest goal of his blossoming soccer career, netting the game-winner in Penn’s 2-1 win over Princeton on Saturday to keep Penn in contention for an Ivy League crown. For his efforts, Hayward was named Ivy League and Philadelphia Soccer Six Rookie of the Week.

Hayward worked a give-and-go with Forrest Clancy in the 61’, settling a ball with his chest and dishing to Clancy just across the midfield strike. Clancy would take a few steps and return the pass back to Hayward who snuck down the left side towards goal and scored on a perfectly-placed shot to the right post. His goal gave Penn its first lead of the match, and would send the Quakers to their seventh win at home this season.

Hayward now leads all Ivy rookies in scoring with five goals this season. His tally gave Penn sole possession of second place in the Ancient Eight and set up a showdown with Harvard this coming Saturday in Cambridge. The Crimson is in first place, two points ahead of the Quakers, with one match remaining.
