San Diego - The University of Pennsylvania heavyweight crew, ranked 15th in the nation, wrapped up competition at the San Diego Crew Classic with grand final appearances in both the Copley Cup and the men's junior varsity races.
Pennfinished fifth in a very tight race for the Copley Cupwith a time of 5:53.49. Second-ranked Cal took the race with a time of 5:43.7. No. 14 Stanford was the runner-up with a time of 5:45.17, while No. 8 Northeastern (5:45.92)edged out the fifth-ranked U.S. Naval Academy (5:47.93) for third by one-hundredth of a second. Purdue rounded out the field with a time of 6:09.93.
In the men's junior varsity grand final, Penn placed fourth with a time of 6:08.47, besting boats from Stanford (6:10.26) and Orange Coast College (6:43.20).Boats from Cal-Berkeley took two of the top-three spots as its Boat 'A' captured the event in a time of 5:58.10. Northeastern was the runner-up in a time of 6:01.39, while Cal's Boat 'B' placed third with a time of 6:04.54.
The Red and Blue is back on the Schuylkill River on April 9 as it battles Princeton and Columbia for the Childs Cup.
